Land Training Notice

Posted January 16, 2010

I have received a few emails and phone calls regarding the placement of swimmers in land conditioning groups, mainly saying the same thing that swimmers/parents feel that they have been moved down a group or no longer with friends.

The old groups were based on swimming groups and there is a difference between swimming and land based exercises. I have been working with all of the swimmers since September 2009 and I have seen there strengths and weaknesses, how they adapt themselves to the training, their motivation, flexibility, form (i.e. how they use weights and their own body weight) and I have taken this all into consideration when placing them in these groups.

It is not my intention to upset any swimmer/parent, but swimmers are placed in these groups for safety, which is the most important. The groups have swimmers with the same ability, which means they get more from the session and I can concentrate on getting those swimmers stronger, I have a better chance of achieving this when they are at the same level.

There are some swimmers that are capable of a lot more and unfortunately they have not shown me this over the last 4/5 months.  So they may well be in a lower group, but this now gives them an opportunity to show me what they are capable of, if they wish to put in the effort required.

This should not be viewed negatively as swimmers will have a better chance of achieving their potential when placed in the correct group.

If you would like to talk about the land training, please come and see me.

Caroline.
