Team Spirit at Boldmere

Posted November 25, 2011

It was a good weekend at Boldmere. One of my highlights, apart from the criss-cross chips I enjoyed at the Saturday evening meal, reveals so much about what makes Southwold such a great club to be part of. I heard one of the older Southwold swimmers asking one of the younger ones how they had got on at the Boldmere Gala, and she was so excited to tell him all about it. The conversation just reinforced the fact that swimming with Southwold is about more than just PBs, trophies and individual results; it's about belonging to a team and celebrating everyone's efforts and successes.

Of the 460 swimmers who attended the meet, only 14 came from Southwold but there was success all round. The team gained 25 trophies overall, and were able to share in the excitement of seeing a swimmer gain their first ever gala trophy. A fantastic result in the 100m level 3 female backstroke event saw Southwold achieving all three podium positions. 79% of our swimmers recorded times above their entry times, with 55% of those making percentage improvements in excess of 8% in certain events. A couple of special mentions; Aidan Loughnane came second in the overall level 3 male competition and Bethan Tomlinson was the top level 2 female swimmer of the meet. Bethan also was the overall winner in the female SKINS race (a continuous swimming race where the slowest competitor gets eliminated each round).

Overall, it was really heartening to see the great team spirit we have here at Southwold, and to know that swimmers value each other's successes alongside their own, as well as producing great champions!
