Parents need to ensure that when swimmers arrive at training they are "fit to train". There have been too many instances of swimmers turning up to training with injuries sustained outside expecting to do different activities from the rest of the group. Given the lane loading and need to focus on the whole group this will rarely be allowed. After speaking to Caroline the same applies to Land Training sessions.
Also there are times when swimmers turn up complaining of feeling sick or with headaches etc, again if they are not well enough to train please keep them at home. It is better in the long run to recover fully rather than keep training.
Most training sessions have a mixture of kicking and swimming and will have sets designed to overload and push their bodies. In essence it will be tough, so they need to be mentally and physically able to train. Therefore, swimmers need to be fit and ready to be challenged at every training session.
We are a competitive swimming club and provide a "swim" specific programme of work which if they attend all the sessions is adequate for them to develop as swimmers. If they are fit and well, but are too tired because they have participated in other sports activities, then again they need to rest and recover, not get hit again with another training load with inadequate recovery.
There may be circumstances where swimmers are being rehabilitated after a long lay off through injury or illness and in those circumstances may be asked to swim in lower groups.
