A mid-sized contingent (7 Boys and 9 Girls) made the trip to Hereford for their Level 2 open meet. It was not as well attended overall as previous years but there were some strong clubs there as well as the Hereford City hosts to provide more than ample competition. Our swimmers raced well all weekend and picked up numerous medals, too many to list. It was difficult at times with many swimmers having just competed at Gwent and in the Club Championships where they had already gained good improvements.
The highlight swim was Steven van der Park doing what he does best with a blistering first 25 in the 50m Freeestyle to win in 24.29 and get a National Qualifying Time. We also had great success with Bethan Tomlinson (14), Peter Rogers (12) and Naomi McCoubrie (10) picking up top girl/boy awards for their age groups. As a club we finished 4th overall which was a good showing considering the relatively small numbers of swimmers we had at the meet. Photos were taken at the meet by a professional photographer and they will be posted here for purchase.
The great performances our swimmers have been achieving now is partly due to the hard work put into the training after the return from the summer break. We have been racing for a few weeks now with a higher portion of training focussed on speed and power. Now Hereford is over, we need to settle back into a "heads down and get the training in" mode again until Christmas, increasing the Aerobic Capacity work again (more metres per session) in preparation for the County Championships in February, so be prepared!
