A very early warm up on the Saturday morning (7.30am) meant that our 28 swimmers were a little bleary-eyed (not as bad as the parents though) as we arrived on Day 1 for the 2 day open meet at Newport. Sunday warm up was a "lie-in" at 8am........
The meet was very well attended by swimmers from a total of 27 clubs, including Millfield, Bradford-on- Avon, Soundwell and Keynsham as well as a large contingent of the South Wales clubs.
Southwold had an excellent Open Meet and overall we finished 6th out of the 27 Clubs. We finished above Soundwell and Keynsham. The standard of the meet overall was very high, with a number of swimmers hitting National Qualifying times. With a level 4 meet for the younger swimmers, in the midst of the main level 1 meet there were events for all standards of swimmers.
Most, if not all swimmers, had PB's over the weekend and therefore too numerous to mention by individual name. Ed Aris and Henry Bennett did well in the 9 year old category, both finishing in the top 10. Peter Rogers and Luke Nicholls both finished second in their age groups, as did Jess Shaw. Jess Graham and Charlotte Bragg both finished in the top 10 in their own age groups. Charlotte Bragg had an interesting Sunday, enjoying the pressure that a number of swims close together created for her! The adrenalin that this produced certainly worked for her, as she swam many PB's. We had numerous bronze medals from the finals that our swimmers qualified for which showed the strength of the Southwold Squad.
Jess Graham, Naomi McCoubrie and Emily Locke all swam a regional qualifying time, with Jess Shaw improving some of her own existing qualifying times.
Thanks to Sarah and Mark for helping out over the weekend. Thanks also to the swimmers for behaving well, and keeping themselves occupied during the long weekend when they weren't swimming.
