Weston Easter Open Meet 2010

Posted April 4, 2010

Without a traffic jam in sight, 28 swimmers (and parents) from the Club headed southbound on the M5 for the Weston Easter Open Meet at Hutton Moor. With an 8am warm up to look forward to on both days, it was two early starts for everyone.

It was another well attended meet, with the usual local clubs attending, plus others from Plymouth Leander, Kelly College, Wolverhampton and Truro City. The standard was high for a level 3 meet, with a lot of the winning times gaining regional qualification. The judges and officials were busy with DQ’s, although thankfully we didn’t get too many. Hopefully not many of them came from our own officials, Tony Graham, Julian Locke and Helen Rogers?

The behaviour of the Southwold Club swimmers was excellent over the weekend, so thank you for that – it makes the coaching work so much easier!

We didn’t expect too many PB’s with this event coming relatively close after the Blocks where many of the Club swimmers had updated their PB’s, but we were delighted with some of the swims over the weekend.  Medals and/or top 3 places in age group were quite hard to come by, but the following swimmers did just that:

Emily Locke 100m BRS, Charlotte Bragg 100m BRS and 200m BRS, Jason Newman 100m BC and 50m Fly, James Robinson 200m IM (Gold) and 200m BC, Jacob Graham 100m BC (Gold), 200m IM and 200m BC, Ross Britton 200m IM, Charlotte Sayer  50m Fly, Anna Britton 400m FC and 200m FC, Jess Graham 100m Fly, Peter Rogers 100m BRS, 50m BRS, 400m IM and 100m IM, Jess Shaw  400m FC (Gold), Lucy Jenkinson 100m BC and 50m BC, Aidan Loughnane 50m Fly and 50m BRS (Gold), Naomi McCoubrie 200m BRS, 50m BRS and 400m IM, George Youlden – 100m FC (who was under 1 minute for first time with a 59.29!), 50m BRS, 100m IM and50m BC, and Sophie Watson 50m BRS.

As well as the medal winners and top 3 placings listed above, most of the swimmers had one of more PB swims over the two days. These are too numerous to mention here, but you know who you are and well done. There were also some excellent swims from some of the younger girls to achieve Regional Qualifying times.

It’s now back to some hard training before the next club event at Newport in May which again will contain some tough competition. As we speak, Keith is already busily preparing the next months training schedule with lots of fast endurance and threshold sets for all the groups.

My thanks to Gary, Richard and John for their assistance over the weekend. Also thanks to the parents for getting everyone there on time with no “race card” incidents. Just a note also to remind parents and swimmers that if they are not going to make the meet for any reason, please can you contact the coaches beforehand to advise them that you are not going to turn up. We can then advise the meet organisers, and also we can stop worrying about where you are!

David
