Cotswold Series

This competition takes place over five galas. The winners of the first four galas plus second places go into a grand final. The other teams go into either the B or the C finals. Details of the teams picked to take part will be posted on the Notice Board. Note that team members picked for the Speedo Competition will not be allowed to swim in the individual events of the Cotswold Series. This means that if you were not picked for the Speedo League you are certain to be picked to swim for at least some of the Cotswold Series Galas so keep on training hard!

Cotswold Series Gala 4 - Saturday 26th April

Southwold finished in 3rd place in round 4 of the Cotswold League. The 11U swimmers were especially strong with comfortable wins in their relay events.

The final table attached HERE is NOW CONFIRMED. We are in 7th place and therefore  in the "A" Final at Hutton Moor. If we can field a strong team and swim to our potential in the final, then a top 3 place is a real possibility.

Final points were:

Bridgewater - 153

Bishopsworth - 140

Southwold - 133

Lydney - 93

Cotswold Series Gala 3 at Yate Leisure Centre

A fantastic performance by all the swimmers in Gala 3 of the Cotswold Series saw us win the gala against table topping Henleaze and third placed Clevedon. We had 22 first places out of the 52 races overall, with 10 first places out of the 16 relays. We were neck and neck with Bristol Henleaze and Clevedon until the first set of relays and then pulled ahead and kept our distance. There were many personal bests and great sprit from the swimmers. We have a gap until the last round on the 26th April and then the final is on the 10th May. We now stand a great chance of making the "A" final.

UPDATE - we are in 6th position after Round 3, only 2 points from 4th position. A good round 4 will put us in the final. Note Henleaze is still in 1st place and Clevedon in 3rd place and we have already beaten them!

Individual wins to:

David Smith-Jaynes (15)

Gemma Smith Jaynes (18)

Ashley Evans (16)

Jack Instrall (10)

Jason Newman (11)

Alex Smith (13)

Andrew Lane (26)

Susannah Hall (11)

Joe Heron (10)

Results are available on the Hy-Tek website HERE

Final Points:

Southwold - 155          Bristol Henleaze - 145                          Clevedon - 134                         Cheddar - 79

Cotswold Series - Gala 2 at Norton Radstock Sat 9th February

At the end of an exciting gala we ended up 3rd. We slowly fell behind Bristol Penguins and Norton Radstock and although we finished fairly strongly through the relays, we were unable to claw back quite enough. We had individual first placings for Rebecca Robinson(12), Andrew Lane(18+), Ashley Evans (16), George Wallington (18), Ben Hutchings (18), Susannah Hall(11) and Joe Heron(10). Final points were:

Bristol Penguins - 153                       Norton Radstock - 143                       Southwold - 138         Minehead - 85

We should still be in a good position after this round but need a strong showing in the next round against Bristol Henleaze and Clevedon.

Cotswold Series - Gala 1 at Monmouth 19th January

Final points: Cinderford - 154,  Southwold - 141,  Burnham - 115, Backwell - 107

I would like to congratulate everyone on a good second place in the first gala of the series. Excellent team swimming and an improvement on the results of last year showing much better strength in depth. We finished very close to Cinderford who placed 4th overall in the "A" final last year and beat both Backwell and Burnham who were in the "B" final.

All the hard work since the start of the season and especially since the New Year is showing, with 60% of individual swims resulting in personal bests; some by large amounts over very short distances. The personal bests were not just constrained to the younger swimmers but those in the 15U and Open category as well which is especially pleasing. I would like to congratulate David (15) and Gemma Smith Jaynes (17) who swam extremely well both shaving a big 3+ seconds off their 100IM swims. Other big improvers on the night were Andrew Lane(27), Susannah Hall (11), Joe (11) & Jess Heron (12), Alex Smith (13), and Luke Nicholls (12).

If you didn't already know because of our position in Division 2 of the Speedo League, we cannot swim anybody who has done a Speedo Individual event in individual events in the Cotswold Series galas (only in relays).

This year we used 23 Swimmers in individual events in the Speedo League, and we only used 4 of those for this gala in the relays. As not all clubs are in Division 2 or above they are not affected by this rule.

Those Clubs affected are Stroud, Street, Bristol Central, Bristol Henleaze & Clevedon and ourselves The rest (including Cinderford who finished 5th in Division 3 of the Speedo League last year) can field unrestricted teams.

The next gala is on the 9 Feb at Norton Radstock and we are against Bristol Penguins, Minehead and Norton Radstock. The 3rd gala is our home gala at Yate on the 1st March where we meet local rivals Bristol Henleaze and Clevedon. If we continue as we are doing, there is every chance we can qualify for the "A" final this year.

Well done to everyone.
