Founders Trophy Gala

The 2008 Gala will take place on SUNDAY 13th JULY from 7:00pm until 9:30pm.

The Founders Gala Summer Disco will take place on Saturday 19th July from 6:45pm until 11:30pm

The Founders Trophy Gala celebrates the history of Southwold Swimming Club. The event is both friendly and competitive, reflecting the two most important aspects of the club’s culture. The teams are named after founder members of Southwold Swimming Club, namely; Buckley, Finch, Guy, Jeal, Russell and Tily; thereby keeping our history alive. Up until 1998, the swimmers were placed in teams to create an even balance of abilities. Swimmers stayed in the designated team until change was necessary to maintain balance. In 1998, all swimmers were re-allocated to new teams on a random basis and this practice continues today.

The Heron Trophy was presented to the Club in 1975 and has been competed for each year since. In 1978, Heron Homes kindly added replica trophies to the original trophy and continued this practice annually.

Heron Homes was taken over by Taylor Woodrow in 1994. The new company decided to continue the support of Southwold Swimming Club and donated a new cup - the Taywood Trophy. The competition then became now known as the Taywood Trophy and ran for five years until 1999. In 2000, Taywood Homes declined to sponsor the event.

Mike and Jane Evans of Evanwood Residential and Nursing Home, Wickwar, took on the sponsorship and presented a new cup to the winners in June 2000.

In 2005, Southwold Swimming Club significantly raised its profile as a competitive swimming club by gaining promotion within the Speedo League and appointing a new coach. Since that time the club has continued to look for new commercial sponsors for events such as the Founders Gala.

In 2006 Southwold Swimming Club was delighted to receive £100 sponsorship from Hanson plc which we have used to present trophies to each of the winning team members. The health of the club is partly measured on the success of club events such as the Founders Gala.
