Bournemouth Open

A small group of younger swimmers made the trip to Bournemouth for their Level 2 meet. It was always going to be a high standard meet and lived up to expectations with many top clubs fielding swimmers. Our swimmers found it hard going to reproduce their Gloucester Blocks form but nonetheless there were many personal bests and some silverware to bring home. Those placing in the top 3 were:

Maddie Hopkinson-Buss (11) - 100 Breast Gold, 50 Breast Gold

Naomi McCoubrie (9) - 50 Breast Gold, 100 Free Silver, 50 Fly Silver

Ryan Bates (10) - 100 Free Gold, 50 Back Bronze

Peter Rogers (10) - 50 Breast Silver

Jack Instrall (10)- 50 Fly Silver

British Championships at Sheffield

Steven Van der Park swam well in the British Championships 50m freestyle with a personal best time of 25.59 seconds which qualifies him for the ASA Youth National Championships later on this year. Our second National Qualifier alongside Bethan Tomlinson! It was a great event with plenty of atmosphere as British Records were broken. We had the great pleasure of meeting Sharron Davies MBE on the poolside (see photo below).

For those of you who are too young to know, Sharron won the 400IM Silver Medal at the 1980 Olympic Games. She regularly appears on Television as a swimming commentator.

“Well Done” to both Steven and Bethan – a terrific achievement!

Gloucester Blocks 2008

The last Blocks weekend saw many more good performances from our swimmers in the 50m races. In these individual sprints we picked up another raft of medals.

Jacob Graham - 50 Fly Bronze, 50 Breast Bronze, 50 Back Silver

Bethan Tomlinson - 50 Back Silver, 50 Free Gold, 50 Fly Silver, 50 Breast Silver

Gemma Smith-Jaynes - 50 Back Bronze

Ashley Case - 50 Breast Silver, 50 Free Bronze

Nikki Smith - 50 Fly Silver, 50 Breast Gold

Steven Van der Park - 50 Back Gold

Holly Payne - 50 Breast Silver

Total of 4 Gold, 7 Silver, 4 Bronze

This brings the individual medal haul for 2008 to 19 Gold, 19 Silver and 14 Bronze for a total of 52 medals,

                                        Gold      Silver     Bronze   Total

2004      - 14th                    4            3            2            9

2005      - 12th                    4            5           12          21

2006      - 7th                      18          11           5           34

2007      - 10th                    8            5           13          26

2008      - TBA                   19          19          14          52

All the swimmers should be very proud of their achievements this year and I think it shows a significant improvement in club standard and depth.

Relays

A great turnout of swimmers for the County Relay races and some fine performances saw Southwold come home with a number of medals. The improvement was clear from 2 years earlier when we were pleased to make finals. We did especially well in the 9-12 year age band where we had 2 teams in the 9/10 Boys, 9/10 Girls and 11/12 Girls races and some of the second teams would have qualified for finals had the rules allowed.

A very big  “Well done” to all.

Gloucester Blocks 2007-2008 Season

Another excellent weekend at the blocks and we gained another 3 Gold, 6 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. The total so far is 15 Gold, 12 Silver and 10 Bronze for a total of 37 medals, 11 more than last year with the 50s still to swim. There were good swims all round with many PBs to be proud of, but the swim of the weekend has to be Bethan Tomlinson's 100 Freestyle swim with a time of 1:01.50, which is a National Qualifying time by 1.25 seconds and moves her to 6th fastest in the UK rankings in her age group!

The other excellent medal winning swims came from Bethan Tomlinson (12), Steven Van der Park (16), Jacob Graham (12), Ashley Case (16) and Ben Hutchings (18).

If you have enjoyed this year’s experience and want to ensure that next year’s swimmers have an equally successful time then why not offer a little of your time to help organise next year’s blocks? They are entirely organised and run by volunteers so without parents like you coming forward to help they cannot run.

Bristol North "B" Grade Gala - 26th January 2008

Sixty swimmers turned out for a very enjoyable gala on Saturday night. We had 2 teams skilfully crafted for equal ability. The teams were pitched against Bristol North, Thornbury, and Dursley but the major competition was against each other and we swam in adjacent lanes. The first round of races were relays which saw a few minor glitches with both teams performing Question of Sport "what happened next" errors. However after these minor teething problems the gala was underway. It was soon clear that Thornbury had a strong team and were likely to swim away from the rest, and the Southwold teams were likely to come second and third. But which one would reign supreme.......?

The lead swapped several times throughout the gala until both teams were all square going into the last race "the cannon". The race was on and it was neck and neck with Thornbury creeping just ahead again. The last leg saw the Southwold Black team just touching in front but with Steven van der Park on the last leg for the Black team the outcome was a near certainty. The Black team touched in 2:07.63 just ahead of the Red team on 2:09.59 with Thornbury winning on 2:04.22.

Final Points:

Thornbury - 218

Southwold Black - 161

Southwold Red - 160

Dursley - 97

Bristol North - 90

Our thanks to everyone for such a great show of club support and team spirit. There was a large smattering of PBs and it really proves that we are getting much stronger in depth throughout the age groups.

Hereford Tour Report

The Southwold Hereford Tour encamped in the local Travelodge, just 5min drive from the pool. Hereford is a pretty place with great shopping (quote – Nikki). On the Saturday night Keith led a band of parents and swimmers on a walk to the local pub to watch the football. Unfortunately, we failed to gain entry, something about “He’s Barred, he might have shaved off his Mexican moustache but I can still recognise him”. Keith said not to worry that it was just a ruse and that this was excellent Land Training for the swimmers. The Tour then marched off to Pizza Hut for a well deserved feast. Keith then showed off his Mexican heritage by knocking back the Corona’s. At the end of the night the drinks bill was more than the food. The E numbers (jugs of pop) helped with the swimmers energy levels as they led the walk back to the hotel with balloons and pizza boxes in hand. The Southwold Hereford Tour had a terrific time, some great swims, good laughs and a few Corona’s.
